Labour Force Survey September 2021

The Calgary Region's unemployment rate fell by 0.7 percentage points in September to 8.9 per cent.

Calgary added 10,400 jobs last month, for a total of 815,500 positions. Calgary’s labour force participation rate also increased, as 4,000 people joined the workforce. Both of these increases come after a flat period, and signal relatively strong growth.  

Alberta’s unemployment rate rose by 0.2 percentage points to reach 8.1 per cent in September, compared with 7.9 per cent in August. The national jobless rate decreased by 0.2 percentage points to settle at 6.9 per cent.

The Transportation & Warehousing and Finance, Insurance, Real Estate & Leasing sectors saw the strongest gains last month, with 4,000 and 3,400 jobs added, respectively. Over the same period, the Educational Services sector was hardest hit, with 3,700 jobs lost.
