New format and unique insights as 2023 Economic Outlook returned in person this October!

After two years of online events and a reset of the global economy, 2023 Economic Outlook powered by ATB Financial returned in person on Wednesday, October 19 with a new format and the latest insights into Calgary's future in a changing world.   
  
The theme for the event addressed a critical question for our city: Is Calgary well-positioned for the transitioning economy?  
 
We heard from leaders including Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek, Brad Parry, President & CEO, Calgary Economic Development and top economists including Rob Roach, Deputy Chief Economist from our presenting sponsor ATB FinancialAlex Grassino, Head of North American Macro Strategy, Manulife Investment Management and Ann-Marie Lurie, Chief Economist for the Calgary Real Estate Board.

Tara Weber has been the Western Bureau Chief for BNN Bloomberg since 2015. Based in Calgary, she covers natural resources, politics and other issues of national economic interest from Canada’s three western provinces.
Tara holds an MBA in Global Energy Management and Sustainable Development from the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business. She also has degrees in Journalism from Toronto Metropolitan University and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Anthropology from the University of British Columbia.

Tara sits on the boards of the Kerby Centre and Accessible Housing and two not-for-profit organizations that assist vulnerable populations in Calgary. She’s a recipient of Calgary’s Top 40 under 40 class of 2018, the Haskayne School of Business’ Rising Star Award of 2020 and the Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference of 2022

Ann-Marie has over 20 years of experience in the real estate sector. She has had the opportunity to work in several different aspects of real estate including commercial brokerage, pension investment, residential real estate analysis and multi-family underwriting. Some of the companies that she has worked for included Colliers International, CMHC and Canadian Urban Equities. Her diverse background in real estate has enabled her to provide insight into the macroeconomic climate and factors impacting the real estate market. Ann-Marie joined CREB® as the Chief Economist in 2011 and recently has been providing analytical services across all markets in Alberta and Saskatchewan. She is responsible for scoping, developing, and leading the economic analysis and market intelligence products for numerous real estate associations. Ann-Marie has completed both her BA Honors and MA in Economics from the University of Calgary.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek

Jyoti Gondek was sworn in as Calgary's 37th mayor and the first woman to be elected to this role on October 25, 2021.

Prior to being elected as mayor, she served as city councillor for Ward 3 from 2017 to 2021. She holds a Ph.D. in urban sociology, and an M.A. in organizational sociology.

Throughout her career, Mayor Gondek has taken a big picture approach to pressing challenges. Often, she has found processes and policies exist simply because they have never been questioned. She has come to understand that by probing and chipping away at issues, we move forward with improvements that have meaning in our everyday lives.

Mayor Gondek’s professional background includes leading the Westman Centre for Real Estate Studies at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business where she examined the challenges facing Calgary’s commercial sector as property values in the core plummeted. She knew then that this issue would be a big one for Calgary. She also ran a successful consulting practice for 12 years helping clients in the energy and city-building sectors evolve their business models to fit a changing regulatory and economic environment

Bryce Starlight represents the Tsuut’ina Nation as VP Development with Canderel MDC Development Management Inc., the entity responsible for the planning and development of Tsuut’ina Developments, a comprehensive 1,200 acre development project in partnership with Canderel that is located adjacent to the southwest border of the City of Calgary. This comprehensive development encompasses three major precincts that will be developed over the next 20 years providing for a wide range of retail, office, entertainment, hospitality and institutional uses. Mr. Starlight has an active role in managing the planning and development activities at Taza including currently leading development at Taza Crossing which includes innovative concepts such as a Living Lab and an innovation accelerator business park and has led development efforts for the Shops at Buffalo Run and the Costco development. He is directly involved in coordinating Legislative, Land Code and Property Tax development, as well as advising on the Nation’s strategic Public Works expansion and growth. Mr. Starlight has an extensive background working with many Aboriginal communities, and has been widely involved in both political and technical working groups relating to First Nations land management, water policy, and resource management. Bryce previously spent over 5 years in the private sector, working closely with Aboriginal communities to develop their pipeline and transmission line applications throughout Alberta and BC.

2022 Economic Outlook

Calgary is a city that is both changing with the world and helping to change the world. That's why this year's theme was "Embracing Disruption and Change". From addressing energy and climate challenges to embracing diversity and inclusion, we are all trying to get to a better place. For Calgarians, that place is right here.  And right now. 

On October 27, 2021, we hosted the 2022 Economic Outlook where we will discuss the opportunities and disruption digital transformation brings. Can innovative thinking resolve economic challenges brought by COVID-19 and the energy and climate change dynamic?

    Vice President & Chief Economist, ATB Todd Hirsch is the Vice President and Chief Economist for ATB Financial. He holds degrees in economics from the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta. For over 20 years he’s worked as an economist at numerous organizations including the Canada West Foundation and the Bank of Canada.
  • Pierre Cléroux, Vice President, Research and Chief Economist, Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC)
    Vice President, Research and Chief Economist, BDC Pierre Cléroux leads a team of experts who analyze economic data to identify business and sector trends impacting Canadian entrepreneurs. A seasoned speaker, he helps business owners understand the risks and opportunities presented by the economic environment.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has put an unprecedented stress on our community and as a result, many of our local support organizations have seen an increased demand for their services.
