Alberta Energy Transition

The Alberta Energy Transition Study finds the global shift to a low carbon future can drive $61 billion in GDP and up to 170,000 jobs in Alberta by 2050. The study highlights growth potential in hydrogen production and utilization, carbon capture utilization and storage, digitalization, electrification and energy efficiency.

The Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub

In a net-zero future, Calgary has $4.6 billion per year hydrogen market potential. The Hydrogen Hub was announced in 2025 and connects the region’s hydrogen ecosystem, leveraging Alberta's existing hydrogen production capabilities and driving large-scale adoption by businesses, industrial operations and transportation networks.

Cleantech is essential to reducing environmental impacts and improving the competitiveness of Alberta’s leading economic sectors. Calgary companies are developing  solutions and exporting them to the world.

E3 Lithium

E3 Lithium uses cutting-edge technology to tap Alberta’s abundant reserves of lithium brine. The lithium is then extracted and purified for use in the electric vehicle and renewable energy sectors. After a successful pilot project, the company is scaling up to produce commercial quantities of the valuable mineral.

CleanO2

Calgary-based CleanO2 is the world’s first microscale carbon capture system. It raised $2.75 million in seed funding in 2022 to expand operations and accelerate growth. The award-winning company’s impressive customer list includes  Lush Cosmetics, FortisBC, Pacific Northern Gas, ATCO and Union Gas.

Pure Technologies

In 2017, water pipeline technology and inspection company Pure Technologies achieved the largest exit in Alberta cleantech history, selling for over $500 million to New York-based Xylem Inc.
