The Search for HMS Erebus & HMS Terror
In 1845, two ships set sail from Britain on a mission of exploration. Three years later, both disappeared in the Arctic. Not one of the 129 men on that expedition returned from the North, and the battered wrecks of these ships, HMS Erebus & HMS Terror, weren't uncovered until 2014 and 2016, respectively.
Brandy Lockhart is an underwater archeologist with Parks Canada, working on the survey and excavation of the Arctic sites of the HMS Terror and HMS Erebus. In conjunction with the exhibition "The Arctic: Real and Imagined Views from the Nineteenth Century" now on at Glenbow, we have invited Brandy to speak about the history of the ill-fated expedition of Sir John Franklin and about her experiences as part of the ongoing search for answers to one of history's great mysteries.
