BASF

BASF is relocating its Canadian agricultural headquarters to Calgary from Mississauga. Sixty people will work out of the office to start but it is expected this number will eventually grow to 90. BASF considered both Winnipeg and Saskatoon before choosing Calgary, joining a number of other global agricultural companies which have head offices in the city.

New World Interactive

Game-development company New World Interactive chose Calgary as the home for their third office. They chose Calgary due to its quality of life, cost of living, turn-key office space and the people that made Calgary stand out above the rest. They project to hire 15 new roles by the end of the year, and foresee that number growing to 60 as they build up their new Calgary office.  

NPower Canada

NPower opened its first location outside Toronto with an office in downtown Calgary that will provide free, short-term training to low income Calgarians ages 18 to 29 interested in careers in the digital economy. NPower expects at least 300 unemployed and underemployed youth in Calgary will enroll in its program to launch rewarding tech careers in the city. NPower received money from the Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund to help launch the location.

NuLeaf Farms

NuLeaf Farms, a developer and operator of automated indoor vertical farming technologies, is establishing its first commercial operation in southeast Calgary. The 6,700 square foot facility will produce high quality culinary herbs year-round for the local market. We helped them navigate a vast network of key industry stakeholders, which has sowed the seeds for years of future growth in our city.

Parkland Fuel Corporation

Parkland Fuel Corporation will consolidate its national operations in Calgary with support from the Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund. Funding will support the relocation, retention or creation of 430 permanent, full-time head office jobs, with more than 200 of those jobs being in information technology or finance. As part of its office consolidation, Parkland will take up almost 100,000 sq.ft. of additional office space in downtown Calgary.

Thin Air Games

Thin Air Labs is joining forces with award-winning developer, New World Interactive, which is opening a new studio space in downtown Calgary. The new initiative, called Thin Air Games (TAG), will give up to 50 new gaming venture teams the opportunity to launch in Calgary over the next four years, offering support with funding, growing and finding success in the industry. TAG will not just help developers, but will help diversify Calgary's tech sector, fill office space and build a new kind of ecosystem.

University of Calgary LIfe Sciences Innovation Hub

Scheduled to open in July, the Life Sciences Innovation Hub at the University of Calgary is forecast to incubate 20-40 life sciences companies per year. The Hub will support research with a commercialization focus. The UofC will receive money from the Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund for programming that will support turning advanced research into commercial ventures.

WeWork

Co-working company WeWork announced its expansion to Calgary in the fall of 2019. WeWork's first location in Calgary will open in October 2019 in the Edison, with a second location on Stephen Avenue Place opening shortly afterwards. WeWork Community Director, Canada (West), Brianna Iverson commented that: “Typically, when WeWork enters a new market, we start with one location to build the foundation and then scale. When it came to Calgary, however, we saw an epicenter of innovation and knew we not only had to be here, but enter in a big way.”
