Managed by an independent Board of Directors, Calgary Economic Development is a not-for-profit corporation funded by the City of Calgary, other orders of government, community partners and private sector through the Action Calgary program.

 

The Role

This role is all about the written word – telling Calgary’s incredible story and persuading businesses and investors to be part of energy. This position has the primary responsibilities for writing the promotional content produced by the Calgary Economic Development team – this includes articles, media & lead generation pitches, website content, presentations, news releases, and collateral. It is also the eagle-eyed editor for the rest of the Marketing & Communications team. This role focuses on our HQ, business and investment attraction strategy.

Key responsibilities for this role are:

  • Manage the content strategy for all channels (strategy, budget & reporting)Execute on the plan to deliver on-brand, timely, and strategy content that enhances the organization’s business and investment attraction efforts

  • Lead the earned-media strategy - develop the storylines, identify the target media and pitch, track media activity

  • Provide on-brand writing support for:

    • Articles (digital and print channels)
    • Media pitches
    • Collateral & lead generation materials (email series, brochures, post cards, etc.)

  • Other marketing and communication support as required and/or directed by Vice President, Marketing & Communications

Education:Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Communications or other relevant experience.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 to 10 years of progressively increased responsibility in copy writing, communications and media relations

  • Experience building content plans and developing different types of articles, media pieces, social media posts

  • Media relations experience that includes building relationships with key journalists and developing pitches

  • Proven experience in brand management in an online environment. Understanding of the business audience, content plans, and bringing a variety of writing styles into a single voice

Unique working conditions:

This position may require long and/or irregular hours including attendance at a number of businesses functions and special events. The incumbent must be able to work effectively within a team environment and maintain composure when under pressure. The incumbent must be able to balance and prioritize demands for information from a variety of sources, both internal and external, and deal effectively with politically sensitive as well as confidential information.

Complexity of duties:

This role requires strategic thinking, writing and editing abilities, multitasking, extreme attention to detail, focus on goals without losing perspective of overall communication strategies and excellent team work. Contact with the Office of the Mayor, city administrators, all levels of government officials, community and business leaders and the media, both locally, nationally and internationally, is an expectation for this position. The actions and messages from the incumbent reflect on the organization and the City of Calgary.
