Calgary RoughnecksThe Calgary Roughnecks arrived in Calgary in 2000 and, just four years later, claimed their first National Lacrosse League (NLL) championship. On May 7, 2004 at a sold out Pengrowth Saddledome, the Roughnecks defeated Buffalo 14-11 to take the Champion's Cup.Since their arrival in Calgary, the Roughnecks have steadily improved their record over each campaign, culminating in the hoisting of the NLL's symbol of supremacy in 2004. Along with being the reigning NLL champions, the Roughnecks hosted the NLL's All-Star game in February 2005. Calgary StampedersThe Calgary Stampeders will celebrate their 60th year of operations in September 2005. The Calgary Stampeders have brought the Grey Cup to Calgary five times and have been runner up six times.The birth of the Canadian Football League Calgary Stampeders as we know them today took place on September 29th, 1945. In November 1948, Calgary received its second Western championship title as well as a Grey Cup as the Stamps chalked up a 12-7 victory over the Ottawa Rough Riders in Toronto. That year, the Calgary Stampeders boasted a perfect 12-0 record and Calgarians christened a week-long celebration which has now evolved into the annual Grey Cup Week festivities. The Vipers joined the most established league in Independent baseball in the spring of 2005 along with their provincial rivals, the Edmonton Cracker-Cats.The Northern League was founded in 1908 and along with the Alberta teams now includes 8 clubs including the Winnipeg Goldeyes, Fargo-Moorhead Red Hawks, Kansas City T-Bones and three Chicago-land teams, the Schaumburg Flyers, Joliet Jackhammers and league champion Gary-South Shore Rail Cats.
