Calgary's geographic location and size identify the city as the major urban centre for the entire southern half of the province. Calgary is located at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers and is situated in the foothills of the majestic Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Calgary lies at the crossroads of two of North America's major highway systems: the Trans Canada Highway which stretches from the Atlantic to the Pacific and the Canamex Corridor, which extends from Northern Canada to Mexico.
