Despite being a founding member of the WECP, Calgary hosted for the first time the organization's AGM in early October. The event took place over three days from October 7 to 9. The WECP represents the largest energy cities in the world which promotes the sharing of best practices and experiences to tackle common industry and city challenges.
The AGM brought 14 global cities to Calgary, which were represented by a combination of city Mayor's, Economic developers and business leaders. The Calgary event introduced two new aspects to the traditional format of previous WECP AGM's. A large business delegation accompanied each city and CED provided B2B matching services for all the business delegates. The feedback has been extremely positive with many companies both Calgary-based and visiting businesses reporting new opportunities had been realized.
The other unique event that happened at this AGM was nine of the WECP cities took part to sign a landmark Calgary Climate Change Accord where cities commited to reducing their Green House Gas emissions by 2020 and 2050. The nine cities who signed the accord were Aberdeen, Calgary, Halifax, Houston, Perth, Port Harcourt, San Fernando, Stavanger and St Johns.
The cities of the WECP will meet again in October 2010 when Perth, Australia will act as the host
