The Calgary Flames started in Atlanta as the Atlanta Flames in 1972 until they moved to the City of Calgary in 1980. The hockey club started playing in a smaller venue named the Stampede Corral before relocating its home arena to the Saddledome which was built in 1983; at that date named the Olympic Saddledome which was constructed for the Olympic Games hosted in Calgary in 1988.
The Calgary Flames have made three appearances in the Stanley Cup finals in 1986, 1989 and 2004 in which they won the Stanley Cup in 1989. The Flames are heading into the teams’ 32nd year in the NHL and take great pride in their loyal fan base. This loyal fan base displays their passion for the sport and the team the highly published and photographed C of Red. With so many people wearing their red Calgary Flames jerseys in the 2004 play off run the C of Red was born.
The Calgary Flames also pride themselves in giving back to the community with our charitable arm of our organization being the Flames Foundation for Life. The Calgary Flames and the Flames Foundation have made giving back to the community a cornerstone of their organization. Through various initiatives, the Flames have touched the lives of thousands of people through their commitment to education, medical research, health, amateur sports and recreation. Over the past 31 years, the Flames and the Flames Foundation have directed millions in funding to important causes right here in southern Alberta. Flames players, owners, alumni, wives, management and staff have always been committed to building better communities through teamwork.
During the 2005-06 season, in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of NHL hockey in Calgary, the Calgary Flames built on this tradition by announcing the Flames Foundation for Life.
The Calgary Flames have extended their commitment to the community through an exciting partnership between the Flames Foundation for Life and the Rotary Club known as the Rotary/Flames Gift to the Community, a $10 million donation to the Community over the next five years!
This alliance will focus on the following key areas: Rotary/Flames House; Southern Alberta's first free-standing pediatric hospice and respite centre for terminally ill children, Rotary/Flames Park at Ronald McDonald House, REACH; the Flames initiative for Medical Advancement and Amatuer and Grassroot Sports. We ensure that our charitable efforts are directed to the Flames Foundation for Life.
