ALBERTA CREATIVE HUB:
By bringing together a common infrastructure, the Alberta Creative Hub, to be developed in Calgary, will foster the growth and innovation of creative industries such as, film, television and digital media companies across Alberta. Calgary Economic Development (CED) has undertaken the necessary steps to bring this project to fruition. We have completed the governance and business models and have incorporated a not-for-profit organization to develop and oversee the project. The Alberta Creative Hub will create a collaborative environment create and utilize local advances in technology and influence the education of new minds. Site selection and initial programming work has commenced. The Alberta Ministry of Culture and Community Spirit has allocated the initial funding commence the development process.

PRODUCTIVITY ALBERTA:
Calgary Economic Development, in collaboration with our partner the Government of Alberta, is taking a lead role to promote innovation and productivity improvement solutions to Calgary businesses, initially within the goods-producing sector but with a view to expand to other key industries.

Productivity is defined in many different ways but itýs really about how well an organization utilizes its resources in order to maximize its value. When it comes to productivity growth, Alberta lags that of other provinces, as well as the U.S. and many other industrialized nations. This affects our global competitiveness and prosperity. Reasons for the lack of productivity growth in Alberta could be related to:

  • A lack of awareness of the importance of productivity improvement
  • An inability of leaders to create a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within their firms
  • Production processes that or not optimized or ýleaný
  • Minimal investment in new equipment and technology

The focus of CEDýs Industry Productivity Initiative is on information-sharing, tools development, communications and leadership development programs to assist companies in overcoming these issues.

Recent projects have included delivery of a report stemming from a regional assessment of productivity issues currently faced by industry; benchmarking and providing workshops on the subject of cost reduction through industrial energy efficiency; and a workshop on financing options for small and medium companies to facilitate the acquisition of new equipment.

WORKshift: "Think outside the office"
WORKshift is a Calgary regional initiative to promote, educate and accelerate the adoption of telecommuting in the business community. WORKshift offers businesses in the Calgary region tools and resources to assess and effectively implement telework programs for their employees.

WORKshift also provides a web tool to track and report on the positive environmental impacts associated with telework. Participating companies are given the opportunity to test world-class onboarding, tracking and training components to make implementation of telecommuting positions fast and easy.
