Daqing, China About CED | Daqing, China
Relationship established: Brief city description: Daqing was once a wilderness, but in 1958 large scale oil exploration activity was undertaken in the Songliao Basin. On September 26, 1959, the No. 3 Songji Exploration well near Datong flowed oil of commercial value. As it was shortly before the 10th Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the oil field was named Daqing Oilfield, literally meaning Great Celebration. Daqing Oil Field has since been the mainstay in China's energy industry. This city was twinned with Calgary for its affiliation with the oil and gas industry. Various special associations have developed between Calgary and Daqing since the twinning, including the naming of Daqing Avenue in Calgary's Chinatown. The province of Heilongjiang and the province of Alberta signed a twinning agreement in 1981. Population: Key Industries/Areas of Opportunity: Daqing is now diversifying its energy-oriented economy. The development of a substitute industry is based on the high-tech sector, but other industries, such as deep processing of petrochemical products, processing of agriculture by-products, electronics and information, building and building materials, medicine, tourism and service are also being rapidly developed.
