Calgary Economic Development is building a strategy to ensure Calgary businesses have the information they need to expand into new international markets.

The basis of this strategy came from a round table session that we held in January 2005. During that roundtable, we asked key business leaders the following questions:
  1. Where has your company done business internationally and what are the opportunities and challenges you have encountered?
  2. What are the challenges to local businesses in doing international trade? Key issues? Exit strategies?
  3. Have you accessed CED or any government services and what, if anything is lacking in assisting your company in penetrating and maintaining new international markets?
After analyzing the answers we received, it was apparent that businesses are looking for seamless access to international trade information and resources. Calgary Economic Development's Trade Development Strategy will guide us in providing the local business community with just that.

CED recognizes it has unparalleled access to the local business community through its business outreach activities. By being this connected, we are able to learn from our local businesses what issues are impeding their growth into export markets.

We consider the market intelligence and services provided by our partners at the provincial and federal governments' key to international business success. Part of the Trade Development Strategy will involve a comprehensive pathfinding service so that businesses know what international trade and market services are available, and how to access them.

Through this strategy, CED will also be able to offer unique city to city opportunities through bilateral and multilateral relationships like The Calgary Sister Cities Program and our membership in the World Energy City Partnership.

Stay tuned for more information on the strategy.
